Philosophical Discussion: Is It Better To Be Realistic Or Optimistic

William Arthur Wart. My opinion is that there’s no fine line between reality and optimism. This is because optimism can influence your words and interactions with others. When one person is having a short or long conversation, positive vibes can be passed on to others. This adds a sense of hopefulness and lifts your spirits. If you believe that today is lucky or think of a joyous time, this will motivate you to move forward. But, be realistic. Be prepared for whatever comes next. When faced with the inevitable, people may find it difficult to accept a change of plans. The individual can choose to either accept the change, learn from it, or dwell on it.

Reality is the state of affairs as it actually exists. Merriam Webster describes optimism as the confidence and hopefulness about the outcome or future of something. You can’t avoid ups or downs when you think realistically. Optimism and thinking of what the best outcome is will help you through. Most people would rather think positive and remind themselves that they will be okay, even if things don’t turn out the way they hoped. In these situations, people are often optimistic without realizing it. You could ask pessimists, realists, and optimists about the glass-of-water experiment. The final conclusion would be that an optimistic person tends to see positive possibilities in what they are presented. Realists tend to see the best possible outcomes from what they are presented with. It is important to remember that one only sees what they want to see. This means that their perception will influence the way they see things.

Remember that people don’t notice the fine lines because they are not very noticeable. Imagine the reality as a large image, with small blotches of optimism scattered about it. Pessimism, reality, and optimism are all pieces in a puzzle. When all the pieces come together, the picture of one’s own life is formed. Initially, reality is the obvious piece. Then, pessimism and optimism are squeezed into other parts of this picture. All of it is one huge interaction. If life were like a mountain road, reality is a bumpy route. While walking up a familiar trail, you can see the sun, a gentle breeze, a flowing river, blooming flowers, and birds starting their flight in the sky. The unexpected outcome of the day leaves you feeling happy and uplifted. The day turns from spectacular in seconds to depressing. At first, you feel a few droplets of rain on your cheeks. But then, they get heavier and more frequent. You hear thunder and see wild animals. It would seem that the journey is over and impossible to complete. Some people are reminded of these optimistic moments, and this can help them face reality.

Lastly, when people feel challenged beyond their level of comfort, they panic. So, to avoid the situation, they leave it without attempting to fix it. The result is that you are setting yourself up to fail, as one day you will face a conflict which can’t be avoided and have a great deal of “weight”. Gene Roddenberry, in a famous quote, said that the human journey is still just beginning. You decide what you want to do with your life and how it will end.
